Former Kent batsman Martin van Jaarsveld has surprised many in the game by agreeing to play for Glamorgan in this year’s Twenty 20 cup.
The 37 year old left Canterbury at the end of last season after six years at the club and subsequently agreed a deal to join Leicestershire, but within just a month of agreeing to join the Foxes, he decided to cancel the agreement and headed back to South Africa.
Six months down the line and having played for Titans in South Africa, Van Jaarsveld has now agreed to join Glamorgan for the Twenty 20’s after scoring 316 runs at an average of 28.72 to help his side win the South African domestic Twenty 20 title.
“The Titans have had a really successful season and this has re-ignited my passion in the game,” he said. “I enjoy playing Twenty20 cricket and I will be working hard to help the Welsh Dragons reach the 2012 Friends Life t20 Finals Day, particularly as it is being held at the SWALEC Stadium.”
Glamorgan’s head of elite development, Matthew Mott, said of the signing: “Martin is an experienced, quality cricketer and his record speaks for itself. We have been looking for genuine match-winners to make us a more potent force and, off the back of a very successful season in South Africa with the Titans, Martin fits the bill.”
Kent are yet to sign a player for the Twenty 20 cup alongside overseas signing Brendan Nash with Jimmy Adams telling Kent Sports News there could be a development on that front soon.
